The Puranas tell that once Ganesh, while riding his mouse, fell down in such a risible way that the Moon burst in laugh. The bellied god looked at the Moon and launched a spell on whoever might look at it in the anniversary of that day that since then is called Vinayaka Chathurthi. This occurrence is a symbol of the fact that every spiritual seeker or prophet will run the risk of being derided by worldly egghead — the Moon is the deity presiding over the intellect — when he will ride his desire to serve, that is riding the mouse, an apparently insignificant vehicle.
