A Yogi in meditation
A Yogi in meditation

Yogis and Vedic seers heard the mantras we know in their meditations. They were not created in a normal state of consciousness as art and literature, but were heard in a higher state of consciousness.

Writers, poets, composers and artists experience an altered state of consciousness during creative activity that is much different from their ordinary state. This altered state is one of deep concentration but is not meditation. The ancient yogis and seers, the rishis, practiced a way of life that put them in a constant state of awareness, directing their energy toward the highest chakra, in a tranquil state of mind, inspired by divine love. In that state, being completely absorbed in their essence, they heard these sound compositions, and when they returned to normal consciousness, they chanted them by memory. Later these mantras were collected and compiled as Vedas by the four disciples of the sage Vyasa.
