Krishna

Krishna, the eighth Avatar of Vishnu, hero of the Mahabharata, together with Rama, is the pillar of Vishnuism.

In the Bhagavad Gita Krishna reveals himself as the Supreme Being: “Arjuna, every time that justice degenerates in the world and evil takes possession of it, I again reincarnate among men. For the restoration of rights, the destruction of the wicked, and the establishment of Dharma, I was born in different ages.”

It is the idea of Avatar, the basic concept that unites polytheism and monotheism: in it there are all the concepts of Indian religious philosophies.

The image of the Divine Coachman who teaches Arjuna how to fight in the Battle Field of Kurukshetra is one of the most widespread of Hinduism, together with that of Krishna the boy of miracles, Krishna Hercules performing prodigious deeds, Krishna the youth with the divine flute mystically enchanting souls, animals and girls, and Krishna the lover among cows and Gopis, who loves thoughtlessly, completely gaily even when mystically transfiguring the worldly joy into mysterious ecstasy. His secret meetings with Radha, the ideal lover, will be the symbol of perfect love.

In Southern India Krishna is the Avatar of saints and poets madly in love with the Divine. In this aspect the Krishnaism comes very close to the mystical and ecstatic Christianity, like for instance that of Saint Theresa.

Krishna’s death, occurred according to the tradition in 3102 B.C., marks the beginning of Kali Yuga, this present age of ignorance.
