Joy is essential

The life of Krishna is well known, and I have always admired its “worldly” side: all the gopis—the shepherdesses of Vrindavan—were in love with Him, and to all He offered His love in return. To achieve this, He would perform an incredible multiplication of Himself, so as to satisfy them all at once. In this sense, He may be regarded as the greatest “lover” in the history of humanity.

Beyond the exalted spiritual values transmitted in the Bhagavad Gita through His dialogue with Arjuna, the story of the shepherd boy turned king is also the exemplary tale of Divine Love—love that gives itself freely and with boundless joy. This aspect, regardless of the different paths one may follow, always inspired in me a parallel between Babaji and Krishna. It is, in fact, a key to the revelation of the Divine within us.

A saying of Sai Baba illuminates this truth perfectly: “Joy is essential for the realisation of God; it is one of the greatest gates to Divinity. Not only is it a mistake not to be joyful—it is the gravest of all mistakes, for it prevents realisation”.
