I sought out the barber, and together we went to the river. Prem Baba, spotting us from afar, came to meet us and pointed out a bend in the current where the water, flowing into a small inlet, formed a kind of pool. It was the place where Babaji loved to perform his daily ablutions, and there existed an unspoken inhibition against using it. The barber’s faint protest died immediately at Prem Baba’s command.

I plunged into that marvel, savouring the joy of novelty; a round, Tibetan-style gourd emerged beneath the tangle of my hair. Prem Baba massaged my bare skin several times, pouring the sacred water over my reddened body with a certain vigor. Finally, a protective ointment was applied.

Reinvigorated, filled with new vitality, I felt as though I had received a second baptism.
