Hanuman Jayanti

Hanuman, the son of Pavan, the Lord of the Wind, and of an Apsara changed into a monkey, Anjani, is the most popular hero in Indian mythology.

Embodiment of Lord Shiva, he incarnates the highest virtues of heroism and loyalty at the service of Rama, the colonizer of India. He appears in the Ramayana and is involved in all the undertakings of Rama, the seventh avatar of Vishnu, against the demon Ravana.

His birth, like that of the whole race of his monkeys, is forecast in heaven before Vishnu-Rama himself manifests on earth. Hanuman descends from the Vedic Marut, the terrific deities of the monsoon, a relationship that sets him in the most ancient tradition. Therefore he has all the legendary virtues of his zoomorphic and superhuman origin: he flies like the wind, he cuts off and takes away mountains, he has the magic power to become gigantic and very small, and above all he is the best warrior, helping Rama to defeat Ravana and conquer Lanka. He is a smart spy and is the first to find Sita, consort of Rama, in the hiding place where the head of the Rakshasa brought her after the abduction.

His love and devotion to Rama and Sita, perfect and happy couple, are limitless. So Hanuman becomes the symbol of the union between Aryans and Dravidians in the age of the great fusions between Northern and Southern India. Since then the monkeys became sacred.

Hanuman deeply knows the holy science and the Vedas. He is the symbol of courage and the force of devotion and love to the Divine, through which one can attain the highest realisations and the liberation of the soul from the materialistic illusion (Sita captured by Ravana).
