There was a general rush toward the base of the hill - I followed instinctively - and I learned that Babaji was finally near! In the distance I saw a group of people that, from where I stood, looked like a moving patch of color, becoming clearer as it drew closer.

My attention was immediately drawn to a man riding a donkey, wrapped completely in a white cloth that left only his face uncovered. Even from that distance, his unusual smile seemed to embrace the entire valley. When he was nearly upon us, a few people ran to meet him, but most stood still, absorbed, hardly breathing, until a mighty cry suddenly split the air:

“BHOLE BABA KI!”

and in chorus everyone answered, “JAI!”

The shout repeated several times until the guru was in front of us; then everyone knelt.
