Giuliano had introduced me to the first books on Zen Buddhism published in Italy, and after reading them, I found myself slipping into an unusual state of introspection, getting lost in the labyrinths of my mind. I was sometimes overcome by a strange longing for distant lands. I realised I didn’t want to spend my life in a big city, caught up in its neurotic pace and disconnected from nature. What weighed on me most about life in our society was the need to sell one’s soul just to earn a living, doing jobs that didn’t interest me, that I didn’t believe in, becoming enslaved to formal social relationships often dictated by self-interest.
